It seems sad to say farewell to 2012, a year which saw nationwide celebrations and National Pride. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee put us in the mood for Bunting-clad Garden Tea Parties with Cucumber Sandwiches, Pimms and Cream Teas. Thoughts of 1977 came flooding back to those old enough to remember the Silver Jubilee when a real sense of national pride rippled through the country as numerous street parties took place.
In June 2012 Cowes High Street was adorned with Union Jack bunting and we had many fantastic window displays through the town, everyone made a huge effort and Cowes looked amazing. We were also honored with a Royal visit, Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip cruised in on the super yacht Leander, welcomed with a 21 gun salute from the Royal Yacht Squadron. Thousands turned out to see them as they walked along the parade to open the new RNLI Life Boat station, before heading to the Yacht Haven. Some Cowes residents met the Queen, many saw her and numerous others caught just a glimpse of Her Majesty, nevertheless a joyously patriotic, flag-waving day was had by all.
We were then given another dose of National Pride when the Olympics hit Great Britain, closely followed but the Paralympics, major feathers in the British sporting cap. To mention just a tiny few the names Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, David Weir and Ellie Simmonds will be etched on our brains forever.
Inspiration from sport was also generated by Bradley Wiggins Double effort of the Yellow Jersey and an Olympic Gold, Rory McIlroy’s USPGA win and of course Andy Murray’s first Grand Slam Victory at the US Open.
